December 2014 Update - Railway 125th Anniversary

The railway in Rayleigh opened on 1st October 1889 so this year is the 125th anniversary.  A plaque provided by Abellio Greater Anglia to commemorate this event was  unveiled on October 3rd 2014 and amongst those attending was a relative of  someone who worked on the building of the station.

The original opening celebration included the local schoolchildren so in honour of this fact we are holding an individual painting competition and also a whole school mural competition open to the 8 Rayleigh Primary Schools. Judging will take place before the end this month and the winning individual entries (1 from Key Stage 1 and 1 from Key Stage 2) will be enlarged and displayed on the station platform and the winning school mural will be  displayed on the exterior of the station on the end wall facing towards London Hill from next year. Some pictures of the unveiling ceremony and examples of the many painting entries can be seen below. Also some of the many painting competition entries are on display in Rayleigh Library until the end of this year.

Other Railway related pictures can also be seen in our March 2012 update.
